Relax and Rejuvenate at Arima Onsen. Direct Access from Osaka Itami Airport!

Did you know that you can reach a famous hot spring resort directly from Osaka Itami Airport on just a single express bus? It is Arima Onsen, often referred to as the “Hidden Retreat of Kansai.” It is one of Japan’s three oldest hot springs (Nihon Sandai Koyō), one of the three major medicinal hot springs (Nihon Sandai Yakuto), and even known as Japan’s “First Divine Spiritual Spring” (Nihon Daiichi Shinreisen).

Why not take a trip to the historic healing space of ‘Arima Onsen’, which you can get to in just 30 minutes by bus?

The Origin and History of Arima Onsen

The origins of Arima Onsen date back more than 1,300 years, and it is known as one of Japan’s oldest hot spring resorts. According to legend, the Japanese gods Ōnamuchi no Mikoto and Sukuna-Hikona no Mikoto visited this area during a trip and discovered the hot spring when they saw three injured crows bathing in a puddle and then flying away after their wounds had healed. This tale reflects the ancient belief in the healing properties of Arima’s hot springs.

The existence of the hot spring is also recorded in the Nihon Shoki (the oldest chronicles of Japan) from the Nara period(710–794), and it has been loved by many people since ancient times.

Arima Onsen is also famous for being a favorite retreat of the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He frequently visited with his wife, Nene, and highly praised its therapeutic effects. During his rule, he helped develop Arima Onsen into a sophisticated spa town and even hosted tea ceremonies here, contributing to its cultural significance. Even today, spots related to Hideyoshi can be found scattered around the hot spring resort, allowing visitors to feel its history.

The Arima Onsen Power Spot Triangle – The Three Shrine Pilgrimage

Upon arriving at Arima Onsen, why not refresh your mind and spirit with the Three Shrine Pilgrimage? Known as the “Arima Onsen Power Spot Triangle,” this route is popular among visitors seeking blessings for good fortune, healing, and success. The three shrines—Tōsen Shrine, Suitengu Shrine, and Arima Tenmangu Shrine—form a sacred triangle within short walking distance of each other (about 10 minutes apart).

It is said that visiting all three shrines enhances the spiritual benefits and allows visitors to receive greater divine protection.

●Tosen Shrine (Tōsen-jinja)

Tosen Shrine, which is worshipped as the guardian shrine of Arima Onsen, is located in the center of the hot spring resort and is a symbol of Arima Onsen. It is a shrine that offers thanks for the blessings of the hot spring, and many visitors come to pray for good health and healing.

  • Highlight: There are hot water pots in the precincts of the temple, where you can feel the energy of the hot springs.
  • Blessings: Health, longevity, disease-free life, and healing.

●Suitengu Shrine (Suiten-gū)

The ‘Suitengu’ shrine, a subordinate shrine located a short walk from the Yusen Shrine, is a shrine that enshrines the god of water, and is particularly popular with those who wish for an easy childbirth and the blessing of children. It is a good idea to visit the shrine to express your gratitude for the abundant water resources of Arima Onsen.

  • Highlight: A peaceful and quiet sanctuary, perfect for meditation.
  • Blessings: Safe childbirth, family harmony, and travel safety.

●Arima Ten Shrine (Arima Ten-jinja)

The last stop in the Power Spot Triangle is Arima Ten Shrine, a branch shrine of Tosen Shrine. The shrine is dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, the god of learning, and is crowded with worshippers who wish for wisdom and academic success.
It is located in the middle of a hot spring resort, but its quiet, green surroundings are a real draw.

  • Highlight: Located on a small hill, it also offers a panoramic view of Arima Onsen town.
  • Blessings: Academic achievement, wisdom, and fulfillment of one’s heart’s desire.

The Symbol of Arima Onsen: "Golden Spring" & "Silver Spring"

Some hot springs are expected to be effective for therapeutic purposes and are classified by the Ministry of the Environment into 10 types of spring qualities. Arima Onsen contains eight of these types (simple hot spring, carbon dioxide spring, bicarbonate spring, chloride spring, sulfate spring, iron-containing spring, iodine-containing spring, and radioactive spring).Hot springs that contain so many components are extremely rare, even on a global scale.

Furthermore, it is extremely rare to find a “gold spring” and a “silver spring” with different properties gushing from the same location, which is the result of a combination of special geological conditions, geothermal heat from plate activity, and differences in the composition of the groundwater. This global natural phenomenon makes Arima Onsen a special place that is different from other hot spring resorts.

Both the gold and silver springs are said to be good for health and beauty, so why not enjoy them both and find the bath that suits you?

●Golden Spring (Kin-sen)

Golden Spring (Kin-sen) is underground water containing salt and iron derived from seawater that gushes up from deep underground and when it oxidizes on the surface it turns reddish brown, creating the golden spring.

This reddish-brown hot spring gets its color from oxidized iron and high salt concentration, which is 1.5 times saltier than seawater.

  • Main ingredient:
Rich in iron, salt, and carbon dioxide. In particular, its salinity is about 1.5 times that of seawater, making it famous as the thickest salt spring in Japan.
  • Benefits:
    • Enhances circulation (relieves poor blood flow, anemia).
    • Moisturizes and warms the skin (helps with dry skin and eczema).
    • Eases joint pain, muscle pain, and neuralgia.

●Silver Spring (Gin-sen)

In Silver Spring (Gin-sen), carbon dioxide gas is dissolved into the ground water when it comes into contact with rocks, and this is what gives the spring its unique composition. Silver Spring (Gin-sen) is clear, colorless, silky, and soft.

  • Main ingredient: Contains carbon dioxide and radium (mild radiation).
  • Benefits:
    • Stimulates metabolism (also called the “Rejuvenation Spring”).
    • Boosts natural healing abilities.
    • Improves circulation and reduces swelling.
    • Supports blood pressure regulation.
