In this article,we have selected four pavilions to introduce to you, with the hope that you will learn more about Japan and Osaka.
The Signature Pavilion “null²” is an innovative exhibition space produced by media artist and associate professor at the University of Tsukuba, Yoichi Ochiai.
The pavilion embodies Ochiai’s concept of Digital Nature, exploring the harmonious integration of digital technology, nature, and humanity.
The exterior, covered with mirrored material, reflects the surrounding landscape and visitors, and the surface dynamically changes shape and undulates thanks to robotic arms inside, making it stand out even more within the venue.
Within the museum, the pavilion presents a worldview that looks ahead to the future 50 years from now, and even 1,000 years from now, and explore a new way of society that transcends the boundaries between the digital and physical worlds.
Visitors’ own appearances are 3D-scanned, and using generative AI, digital humans called ‘Mirrored Body®’ are created. By interacting with these digital avatars, visitors can reimagine their future selves and their relationship with society—a space that truly serves as a mirror to the future.
This Signature Pavilion is produced by renowned roboticist and Osaka University Distinguished Professor, Hiroshi Ishiguro.
The exhibit invites visitors to consider a future shaped by advancements in AI and android technology—posing profound questions such as: How will humans coexist with robots? And how might the concept of life itself evolve?
The pavilion is divided into two immersive zones: “Life 50 Years from Now” and “Mahoroba—Life 1,000 Years in the Future.” Through a combination of film, audio, and lifelike androids, each zone offers a multisensory experience of potential future societies.
In “Life 50 Years from Now,” visitors are guided through a depiction of everyday life in 2075, where androids are naturally integrated into the family. Using bone-conduction audio devices, guests follow the narrative at their own pace.
One particularly moving scene portrays a grandmother reflects deeply on her own “options for life,” prompting viewers to deeply consider what “life” might mean in an age of intelligent machines.
Meanwhile, “Mahoroba”—the vision of life 1,000 years ahead—presents a dreamlike environment where the human form is no longer constrained by physical limitations. Bathed in light and sound, the space offers a contemplative glimpse into humanity’s future as transcendent, non-material beings.
The Bandai Namco Group is exhibiting at the GUNDAM NEXT FUTURE PAVILION.
This pavilion captures the ‘life in space’ and ‘scientific technologies that have yet-to-be-realized’ depicted in the Gundam series as possibilities for a new future, and brings them to life through completely new, immersive images and the pavilion space, which spans Phases 0 to 7.
This pavilion is a must-visit not only for longtime Gundam fans, but also for those intrigued by space exploration and future technologies.
Inside the pavilion, visitors can enjoy an immersive experience combining images measuring up to 18 metres deep and 8 metres high with Sony’s haptic feedback technology, ‘Haptic Floor.‘
This is an experiential attraction that successfully combines actual space plans with elements from the Gundam story. Visitors can enjoy travelling from Yumeshima Terminal to the space station Star Jaburo via an orbital elevator in a setting called the ‘New Universal Century.‘
Note: Reservations (in advance or on-site) are required to enter the pavilion. The full experience lasts approximately 50 minutes.
Outside, there is a life-size Gundam statue, ‘RX-78F00/E Gundam,’ standing approximately 17 meters tall, which is a must-see for Gundam fans. Even if you are not a fan, the statue’s pose, with one knee raised and arms stretched out towards the universe and the future, is very impressive.
This figure was created by repurposing materials from the moving Gundam originally exhibited in Yokohama between December 2020 and March 2024. It marks the first such installation in the Kansai region.
Note: Viewing the Gundam statue does not require a reservation. It is open to the public from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
“Maido ookini!”—the warm, everyday greeting from Osaka sets the tone for the UTAGE Pavilion, where the theme is food, community, and joyful connection.
At this pavilion, visitors are invited to explore Japan’s rich culinary traditions and the wisdom of living in harmony with nature—all through the five senses.
“When people gather in search of joy, they require good food and drink, pleasing colors and forms, delightful sounds and conversation, and thoughtful presentation. In Japan, we call this experience ‘UTAGE’—a festive gathering of hearts and tastes.”
— from the official pavilion description
Known as “the nation’s kitchen,” Osaka is a city that has long brought smiles through food.
Its cuisine is imbued with hospitality, humor, and, above all, human warmth.
In an increasingly efficiency-driven world, the spontaneous and vibrant energy of human connection is what truly nourishes the future.
“In every Osaka dish, there is always a person behind it. There is warmth. And it is this joyful, quirky, and human energy that we believe is essential nourishment for the days ahead.”
— from the official pavilion description
On the first floor, guests can enjoy a diverse array of dishes and beverages that bring together the flavors of the past, present, and future—truly embodying Osaka’s spirit as “the kitchen of the nation.”
On the second floor, visitors are invited to participate in hands-on programs, including the “Wabi” zone, where one can experience Japanese tea culture and food aesthetics, and the UTAGE Lab, which offers culinary workshops.
“To eat, to laugh, to live—this is life shining at its brightest.”
The UTAGE Pavilion celebrates the joy of human connection through food, inviting all to partake in its spirit and artistry.
